Financial Aid

WE’RE HERE EVERY STEP OF YOUR JOURNEY

Welcome to Xavier University of Louisiana’s Office of Student Financial Aid. Our goal is to provide all prospective and continuing students with the information needed to obtain financial assistance for your education here at Xavier University of Louisiana. The cost of a college education requires a major financial expenditure for many families.  Here we’ll walk you through learning about how to apply for financial aid, types of aid available, how to keep your aid, and ways to manage your finances throughout the college experience.

LET’S GET STARTED

The most important step in applying for financial aid is completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year. At Xavier University of Louisiana, the FAFSA is the only application required to apply for federal and state aid.  The first day you can submit the FAFSA for the new academic year is typically October 1.  This date has changed for the 2024-25 academic year; see below.  Some types of aid are limited in funding; therefore, apply early to optimize your eligibility for aid. We recommend all students complete the application as early as possible each year.

New, Transfer, and Re-Admitted Students

Apply for admission to Xavier University of Louisiana. You must be accepted for admission and in a degree-seeking program before the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships can determine your financial assistance.

Submit all transcripts from previous schools attended.

All Students

Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You must list Xavier University of Louisiana on your FAFSA so we can receive the results. Xavier’s school code is 002032.

Review your FAFSA Submission Summary/Student Aid Report. If it is rejected, requires correction, or you are selected for verification, read the instructions carefully and take appropriate action.

Missing something? When the Office of Student Financial Aid receives a copy of your FAFSA, you may receive a "missing information" email outlining further information the office may require to complete your application.  This information will be emailed to you at your Xavier email address.  Please check for emails from us regularly!

THE FAFSA FORM HAS CHANGED!

The FAFSA Form for the 2024-25 academic year has been transformed based on the passage of the FAFSA Simplification and FUTURE Acts.  The FAFSA Form now provides an easier, more streamlined application process of applying for federal financial aid. Highlights of the new FAFSA, which will open in December for the 2024-25 academic year, include a reduction in the number of questions from 108 to 36, expanded eligibility for federal aid for more students, and reduced barriers for certain student populations.

Here are the key changes to the FAFSA Form for the 2024-25 academic year:

Contributors

A contributor is anyone who is required to provide information in support of the student's financial aid application. A contributor is a student, parent, guardian, or spouse.

For the 2024-25 application, each contributor is required to have a Federal Student Aid ID (FSA ID) to access the FAFSA, consent to using the IRS Direct Data Exchange (DDX), if applicable, and sign the FAFSA electronically.

IRS Direct Data Exchange

Instead of entering financial information manually, each contributor on a student's FAFSA application must consent to the IRS Direct Data Exchange (DDX), allowing their data to be transferred directly to the FAFSA.

There is no opt-out for this requirement.  If a contributor does not consent, the student will be ineligible for federal aid.

Student Aid Index

The Student Aid Index (SAI) is replacing the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). This value is based on a new formula which links eligibility to family size and federal poverty levels.

Financial aid staff will use the SAI to award need-based grants and scholarships.

BE PREPARED

If you don’t already have an FSA ID, create one now prior to the FAFSA opening in December 2023.

  • There will be a 1-3 day confirmation period before you can use it.
  • The FSA ID can be retrieved if you have forgotten it. You may only have one FSA ID.

Have your contributors apply for an FSA ID if they don’t already have one.  Each contributor must have their own FSA ID to help complete your FAFSA.

For more details about FSA IDs, visit What is an FSA ID? at http://studentaid.gov/help/fsa-id

Have related documents ready, including:

  • 2022 federal income tax return or evidence of income earned from W-2s or pay records
  • Records of child support received
  • Current balances of cash, savings, checking, time deposits, and money market accounts
  • Net worth of investments (including real estate which is not the primary residence), businesses, and farms

Xavier University of Louisiana’s school code is 002032.

Accuracy is important when you apply for financial aid. All information is subject to verification according to state and federal regulations. False statements or misrepresentations may be cause for the reduction, cancellation, denial, or repayment of financial aid.  You may make corrections to your FAFSA if needed.

To check the status of your application, visit Federal Student Aid http://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa.  Once completed, you will receive an email confirming you have successfully submitted your FAFSA.  You will also receive a FAFSA Submission Summary from the federal processor.  The FAFSA Submission Summary provides you with a Student Aid Index (SAI).  The Office of Student Financial Aid will receive a copy of your completed FAFSA and use the SAI to determine the types of aid you may receive.
